Alopecia totalis is a condition similar to alopecia areata, however there is total hair loss of the scalp hair. This condition is believed to be an autoimmune condition. There is an autoimmune response against the hair follicle.
The immune system for some unknown reason attacks the hair follicle causing hair loss. Many researchers and scientists believe that there are possible triggers that might be responsible for this condition.
A prolonged illness, a virus, or possibly something in the environment that the person is exposed to are some of the thoughts as to why this autoimmune response begins, however the cause is still unknown.
Living with hair loss can be quite challenging and frustrating at times; especially when the causes of certain conditions are not known.
