Trichotillomania is a disorder that seems to be most common in females. It is thought to be a compulsive behavior where the person will pull out the hair on the head.

In some cases, the eyebrows, the eyelashes or other body hair can be damaged as well. Sometimes there is twisting or nervous pulling of the hair at stressful times. This can cause the hair to break off at the scalp area near the roots.

It is important to deal with the source of the stress that triggers the nervous pulling of the hair so that the condition can be resolved.
