Women Experiencing Hair Loss Due to Chemotherapy Treatments

Once you begin your treatments, cut a sample of your hair so that you will be able to match the shade that is closest to your hair color.

When choosing a color for the wig, it is better to go one shade lighter rather than darker that is closest to your natural color or the shade that you currently have. It is sometimes impossible to get the exact shade. If purchasing a synthetic wig, sometimes the synthetic fibers will appear darker on the wig than they do on a small sample of hair on a color ring that you might choose from.

Human hair wigs can be colored darker; however they usually are more difficult to lighten than to make a darker shade. This is why it is suggested to always go a shade lighter since it may be impossible to lighten them effectively once they have been purchased.

Synthetic wigs are easier to care for and will be a good choice for you if you do not want to spend a lot of time with styling. Human Hair wigs generally will take the same amount of care that naturally growing hair requires.

It is a good idea to ask your doctor to provide you with a letter of medical necessity and a prescription for a medical cranial prosthesis if you want to pursue reimbursement from your insurance company. You can check with your insurance company to see if they will cover the expense of the cranial prosthesis. Insurance companies will probably require the wording of medical cranial prosthesis rather than wig. Sometimes a wig is considered a fashion product rather than a medically necessary item.

It is suggested that you not chemically treat your hair while taking the chemotherapy treatments and wait several months after the treatments have been discontinued so that all of the drugs have been cleared from your system. Many women say that once they complete their treatments, their hair grows in darker and sometimes is much curlier than before. This will all depend on the individual.

If your scalp is sensitive and the wig seems to irritate your skin, you can cut a piece of very soft cotton (from a thin cotton tee shirt material) to serve as a liner under the wig and this will be more comfortable. Be sure to keep the cotton liners clean. You may want to cut several of them so that you can wash and change them daily.

It is also very helpful to keep you scalp very clean with a mild cleanser and be sure to rinse well so that there is not any soap build-up on the scalp. This will help to prevent irritation and itching when wearing the wig.

When washing the wig, be sure that you rinse out all of the shampoo and conditioner several times. If there is a build up of these products, it can cause itching that can be uncomfortable when wearing the wig.
